STM - Society in motion
How do you prevent dripping and accidental spillage during the refuelling of buses? The STM has the solution.
Since 2005, the STM has been equipping the majority of its buses with an advanced anti-spill fuel system. Completely leak-proof, its mechanism eliminates repeated dripping and accidental spillage of fuel on the ground.
This major upgrade thus allows for clean refuelling of some 1 000 buses that are supplied with fuel each day at the 17 refuelling sites at the STM’s 7 bus depots.
By preventing diesel fuel from dripping repeatedly onto the concrete surface of refuelling areas, the STM is reducing the level of contaminants for on-site treatment by garage oil traps prior to discharging the wastewater in the city’s sewer system. Another small gesture by the STM to better protect the environment.
Two new service improvements on the Express 467 will make life easier for clients by cutting down on their commuting time.
Since August, 50 buses on that route’ve been equipped with a “transit info system” and enjoy priority measures at traffic lights. While the system verbally announces and displays the next planned stops on electronic screens, driver and passengers can enjoy the advantages of priority measures at traffic lights.
The 467’s limited number of stops already lowers travel times by 10%, so imagine what can be done with an automated system that extends a green light or activates a signal giving buses a head start over cars !
Combining reserved lanes and priority traffic signals will save 20, even 30% more time for transit users. With priority traffic lights at 39 intersections and 50 articulated buses equipped with the priority detection and bus stop announcement system, the Express 467 gives passengers an idea of what they can expect from public transit in coming years.

The 467 project is a showcase project that will help us transition towards tomorrow’s transit service.
Client
I really like the new buses because they are really pleasant to travel in, there’s less noise, more room and easier to access.
Denis Soucy, Superintendent, Service Delivery, STM
We implemented a number of measures. Let me tell you about the reserved lanes. In the morning, the reserved lane is southbound, and in the afternoon, it is northbound.
Client
It’s faster in the morning.
Denis Soucy, Superintendent, Service Delivery, STM
We also adopted bus priority measures. The bus is equipped with a GPS, and when it stops at a traffic light, two or three passengers can board. As soon as the doors close, the bus is given the priority by the traffic light control box.
Daniel Fiset, bus driver, STM
For bus drivers who have to constantly rejoin the flow of traffic, I think priority lights are an advantage. I also think that, now, motorists are less aggressive, that there is less conflict. They have to give way and I don’t think they mind that much.
Denis Soucy, Superintendent, Service Delivery, STM
Also, one of the needs expressed by transit users in the past was having the name of the next stop called out. There are now two screens inside, with LED lights, and we announce the next stop both visually and orally.

Client
This way, everybody can hear it well.
Cliente
This is useful for people with a visual impairment, or handicap.
Denis Soucy, Superintendent, Service Delivery, STM
We also worked closely with representatives of the disabled community, and with people who were either visually or hearing impaired.
Cliente
It’s really interesting to be able to see what the next stop is, but I find that hearing it is a bit much.
Client
I can see this is a good thing, because it’s a big help for people who don’t know where to exit the bus. Yes, it’s a big help.

So please, I’m calling upon everyone. Log onto our website, and answer the survey for the 467 bus route that is currently online. We want your feedback, because it will help us go forward with our Society in Motion.
The STM helps seniors overcome their feeling of isolation by providing them with the means for greater mobility. How? With a Navette Or shuttle bus.
What is a Navette Or ?
These shuttles follow a specific route in a given neighbourhood, two or three days a week, according to a regular schedule, during off-peak periods, using a 20-seat minibus.
The minibus picks up seniors at their residences and takes them to specific points of interest in their area, such as shopping centres, grocery stores, pharmacies, libraries, community centres, etc. This means less walking and less transfers for them, which raises their feeling of security and comfort. In addition, the shuttle service helps to improve the quality of life at the local level, as each shuttle route takes less than one hour to complete.
Since 2008, a total of 10 Navette Or shuttle routes have been created. Over the next few years, the STM would like to deploy several Navette Or routes each year. The lastest are: the new 263 – Navette Or Bordeaux-Cartierville and 262 – Navette Or Côte Saint-Luc shuttles buses. They provide seniors with greater mobility within their neighbourhood.
Why are there Navette Or shuttles ?
The aging of the population is a growing phenomenon in Québec, and in Montréal. An increasing number of clients require specific services that the regular transit network cannot handle, such as infrequent trips and/or irregular transit use, during off-peak periods, over short distances

In an effort to provide you with even more service when using the bus network and make your life easier, the STM offers high-frequency bus service on 31 of its bus routes.
The 10 minutes MAX network means:
- A bus every 10 minutes maximum from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays on 31 bus routes
- A greater frequency of bus service in areas without métro service
- A transfer point with at least one métro station
- A walking distance of less than 1 km
- A rapid network accessible to 568 000 clients
- 50 articulated buses flying the network’s own colours
The STM is currently consolidating its bus services into groups, known as families, based on the type of service, such as local bus routes, express lines, night time routes, those dedicated to specific clients and the 31 lines making up the backbone of the 10 minutes MAX network.
