The new bus body workshop February 18, 2009

Green actions

Vegetation roof and walls to keep the building naturally cool in summer, highly energy-efficient boilers, low-emission materials and others made from recycled matter, all made in Québec… Every detail was well-thought out, making the STM’s new bus body workshop, where major maintenance work is conducted, a building that reflects the ideals of sustainable development.

Construction of the eco-friendly building was made possible through the support of Transports Québec. The building is also noteworthy for its harmonious integration in the surrounding residential neighbourhood. Proof that everyone wins when thinking green.

Green is trump for the STM’s new bus body workshop

> Vegetation Roof

From atop its 950 m2, the workshop’s green rooftop will also help control water run-off by cutting its amount by half, double the roof’s service life, counteract urban heat pockets and periods of smog, increase the building’s energy efficiency and promote bio-diversity.

> Solar Wall

The 500 m2 solar wall will help to heat the building naturally by making maximum use of the sun’s heat in winter. Energy-efficient, the wall could lead to annual savings of 24 700 m3 of natural gas.

> Vegetation-covered Walls

These vegetation barriers, designed to support vines and other plant, will act as a natural filter for air pollutants and as a sound buffer, while keeping the building cool in summer.

> Heat recovery

Installing high performance boilers will lead to a 10% increase in energy efficiency.

> Roller Compacted Concrete Pavements

More resistant than flexible pavement, this concrete mix is expected to last some 15 years longer than asphalt. It prevents collapsing pavement, potholes and ruts, while calming the effects of urban heat pockets. Highly resistant to abrasion, it is impervious to water, oil and fuel, a must for any eco-friendly bus body workshop.

> Green Spaces

Bicycle racks, rain water retention ponds landscaped with plant material, newly planted trees and recreational areas all add up to a workshop in harmony with its residential neighbourhood.

BUS BODY SHOP Jocelyn Leblanc, Project Director, Major bus Projects The mission of the bus body shop is quite simply to provide body maintenance work for the entire STM fleet of vehicles. From the start, during the planning and specifications phase, there was a concern for the Centre’s design, in terms of sustainable development. A 100% GREEN BUILDING CONSTRUCTED FROM LOCAL MATERIALS As for the green roof, the main goal for that roof is to ensure that vegetation was integrated in the design. Falling rain is, for the most part, absorbed by the soil, so that it does not end up in sewers, which reduces the volume of water directed to the city’s sewage system. FOR COOLER TEMPERATURES AND A LONGER SERVICE LIFE FOR THE ROOF The plants growing on the surface of the green wall absorb the heat without transferring it to the inside of the building. AN ESTHETIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL SURFACE Compacted concrete has a much lighter coloured surface that absorbs less heat. Secondly, as a surface where buses circulate, it is very adapted, in the sense that concrete is much more resistant that asphalt, in the long term. There are no ruts, no cracks, and we will see a service life that lasts twice as long as for asphalt. MORE RESISTANT AND A LONGER SERVICE LIFE THAN ASPHALT We optimized our glass surfaces. We even have skylights on the roof to bring as much natural light as possible into the building. A MAXIMUM AMOUNT OF NATURAL LIGHT FOR A MINIMUM AMOUNT OF POWER CONSUMPTION The building’s entire heating system has a higher energy efficiency rating than average. We chose high-performance machinery compared to the standard on the market to lower our electricity consumption and prevent useless environmental pollution. TRANSFORMING WATER VAPOUR INTO ENERGY = MAJOR HEATING SAVINGS You can also see that we are concerned for adjoining properties. When we build something, we make sure the integration is a pleasant one for our neighbours.

    Merci!

Solar panels can conceivably be used, as they can supply several energy sources. When the bus body shop was built, solar energy was not chosen. However, this might change with future building projects at the STM …

Debbie, STM did not attempt to get LEED certification for its Legendre project. However, it plans to obtain LEED certification for its new transportation centre, due to open in early 2013.

I’m really impressed at all the initiatives that the STM is taking to be more sustainable, especially this one! Will the building be LEED certified?
